More output. Whose income?
GDP measures the market value of final goods and services produced within an economy during a given period.
Domestic does not mean domestically owned. A foreign-owned factory contributes to GDP where production takes place. The nationality of its shareholders does not remove that production from the domestic accounts. Ownership and residence matter when we move from domestic production to residents’ primary income.
A foreign investor buys an existing factory for $200m. Does this transaction itself add $200m to GDP?
No. It transfers ownership of an existing asset. Newly supplied legal, valuation or brokerage services can contribute to current GDP.
Replacing domestic battery production with imports removes the battery maker’s $180m contribution, while the other domestic stages are unchanged. Domestic GVA therefore falls from $700m to $520m.
The output, income and expenditure approaches describe the same production from different sides. In this simplified chain, wages plus gross operating surplus equal basic-price value added. Adding net product taxes gives the market-price contribution. Final consumption includes imported content, so imports must be deducted when identifying domestic production. Wages are a payment out of value added, rather than an intermediate purchase to subtract a second time.
Reconcile the EV chain’s market-price GDP contribution.
- Output: 700 + 60 − 10 = 750
- Income: 400 + 300 + 60 − 10 = 750
- Expenditure: C 1,050 − M 300 = 750
Each approach gives US$750m; do not add the three totals.
Should wages of 400 be deducted from value added of 700?
No. They are part of the income generated by that value added.
GDP(市场价格)固定为 50,000。
GDP follows domestic production, whereas GNI follows primary income accruing to resident units. Residence is an economic concept and is not determined simply by a passport. Add primary income receivable from abroad and subtract primary income payable abroad. Country A’s net primary income is negative, so its GNI is below its GDP. A personal transfer from a relative overseas is not automatically primary income and should not be inserted into this calculation.
Calculate GNI at market prices.
- Net primary income = 600 − 1,600 = −1,000
- GNI = GDP + net primary income
- GNI = 50,000 + (−1,000) = 49,000
GNI at market prices = US$49,000m.
Would foreign ownership make the factory’s domestic output disappear from GDP?
No. Its domestic production remains in GDP.
Gross measures include consumption of fixed capital. Net measures deduct it to recognise the capital used up during production. Subtracting depreciation from GNI gives NNI; subtracting it from GDP gives NDP. Spending on a new machine is investment, while consumption of fixed capital records the machine’s economic depreciation during the period. A net measure is useful, but it is not a complete measure of environmental sustainability or household wellbeing.
Find NNI and NDP at market prices.
- NNI = GNI − consumption of fixed capital = 49,000 − 4,000 = 45,000
- NDP = GDP − consumption of fixed capital = 50,000 − 4,000 = 46,000
NNI = US$45,000m; NDP = US$46,000m.
Does GDP minus depreciation equal NNI?
No. It equals NDP; the residence adjustment is still missing.
gross/net与domestic/national是两条独立的调整轴。
Market prices and basic prices differ by taxes on products less subsidies on products. To move from GDP at market prices to aggregate GVA at basic prices, subtract product taxes and add product subsidies. The subtraction removes the product-tax component from the market valuation. Income tax and corporation tax are not product taxes. Basic prices should also be distinguished from factor cost when a question includes other taxes or subsidies on production.
Convert national GDP from market prices to basic-price GVA.
- Net product taxes = 2,500 − 500 = 2,000
- GVA at basic prices = 50,000 − 2,500 + 500 = 48,000
GVA at basic prices = US$48,000m.
Product subsidies rise by 200 while GDP at market prices and product taxes are held constant. What happens to basic-price GVA?
It rises by 200.
Injections · 注入
Leakages ·
In a closed economy with government, equilibrium requires I + G = S + T. Trade introduces exports as an injection and imports as a leakage. The condition becomes I + G + X = S + T + M. A rise in exports initially increases planned expenditure on domestic output, but the eventual income change depends on how the other flows respond.
Nominal GDP values production at current prices. Real GDP removes price changes so that the comparison focuses on production volume. With a base-year index of 100, divide nominal GDP by the GDP deflator and multiply by 100. Country A’s nominal GDP rises by 12.2%, but its real GDP rises by only 2%. Subtracting percentage changes gives an approximation; using the index ratio gives the exact result for these data.
Year 0: nominal GDP 50,000, deflator 100. Year 1: nominal GDP 56,100, deflator 110.
- Year 1 real GDP = 56,100 ÷ 110 × 100 = 51,000
- Nominal growth = (56,100 − 50,000) ÷ 50,000 × 100 = 12.2%
- Real growth = (51,000 − 50,000) ÷ 50,000 × 100 = 2%
Real economic growth = 2%.
Could nominal GDP rise while real GDP falls?
Yes, if prices rise sufficiently while output volume falls.
Real GDP per capita equals real GDP divided by population. It adjusts for both price changes and the number of people sharing the economy’s output. If real output and population grow at the same rate, real output per person is unchanged. This is an average production measure, not a wage payment. It does not describe the income of a particular household, nor does it show how income is distributed across the population.
Compare real GDP per capita across the two years.
- Year 0: US$50,000m ÷ 2m people = US$25,000 per person
- Year 1: US$51,000m ÷ 2.04m people = US$25,000 per person
- Real GDP per capita growth = 0%
Total real output rises, while real output per person is unchanged.
Real GDP rises by 3% and population rises by 5%. What happens to real GDP per capita?
It falls by about 1.90%: 1.03 ÷ 1.05 − 1.
Converting income at the market exchange rate does not fully account for differences in local prices. A purchasing-power adjustment asks what comparable goods and services the income can buy. In this illustration, the lower market-dollar income has greater purchasing power because its local price level is lower. PPP improves the price comparison, but the choice of basket, differences in quality and variation within a country still affect how useful the result is.
Illustrative price-level indices: A = 125, B = 88, common international benchmark = 100.
- A: 25,000 ÷ 1.25 = 20,000 purchasing-power units
- B: 22,000 ÷ 0.88 = 25,000 purchasing-power units
A has higher market-dollar income; B has higher purchasing power in this illustration.
Does a PPP adjustment solve the problem of unequal income distribution?
No. It adjusts purchasing power, not the distribution of income.
GDP
GNI*
A rise in domestic production can create jobs, wages and tax revenue. However, production and residents’ income are different accounting concepts. Foreign investors may receive some of the income generated locally, while residents may earn income overseas. Before using a headline figure to judge living standards, identify its geographical coverage, price basis and population coverage. Then ask whose income changed and whether the available evidence supports a claim about households.
Ireland, 2025, current prices: GDP €602.44bn; GNI* €333.97bn. What does the comparison establish?
- 333.97 ÷ 602.44 × 100 ≈ 55.4%
- The two measures differ substantially because they apply different accounting adjustments.
It establishes a measurement gap; it does not show that households receive exactly 55.4% of GDP.
Does the gap prove that 44.6% of GDP was paid abroad?
No. GNI* also makes adjustments beyond net primary income.
An increase in average income can be concentrated among a small group. In this ten-household example, total income rises by 20%, but the incomes of eight households do not change. The mean rises while the median remains constant. A strong evaluation therefore checks how gains are distributed, rather than treating an average as a description of every household. Inequality and poverty are related, but they measure different features of income outcomes.
Eight households earn $80,000 each and two earn $180,000 each. Only the top two each gain $100,000.
- Initial total = 8 × 80,000 + 2 × 180,000 = 1,000,000; mean = 100,000
- New total = 1,200,000; mean = 120,000
- The 5th and 6th households still earn 80,000, so the median remains 80,000
Mean income rises 20%; median income is unchanged.
Can inequality rise even if every household’s real income rises?
Yes. Higher-income households may gain proportionately more.
Higher real output can improve living standards through employment, income and the resources available for public services. Each link needs explanation. The benefits depend on access, distribution and the way additional resources are used. Production may also create pollution, congestion or longer working hours. Some spending on repairing harm contributes to recorded output, while the underlying loss of wellbeing is not fully deducted. Sustainable progress therefore requires evidence beyond GDP alone.
A factory adds 100 of measured annual output. Residents spend 8 on additional treatment and cleaning. Can welfare be calculated as 100 − 8?
- The 100 records additional output, not a money valuation of all benefits.
- The 8 records certain expenditures, not necessarily the full social damage.
- Identify health, time, environmental and distributional effects before making a welfare judgement.
The information is insufficient to calculate a net welfare change of 92.

The most useful indicator depends on the question being asked. GDP is directly relevant to domestic production; GNI is relevant to residents’ primary income. HDI combines health, education and income dimensions, while MPI examines overlapping deprivations. These measures can complement monetary averages, but they still involve data and weighting choices. A justified conclusion selects evidence that matches the question and states the conditions under which the judgement is likely to hold.
Country C: real income per head $25,000, life expectancy 72. Country D: $22,000, life expectancy 81. Which has higher living standards?
- C ranks higher on the supplied income measure.
- D ranks higher on the supplied health measure.
- Education, distribution, prices and other conditions are needed for a broader judgement.
Neither country can be ranked confidently on overall living standards from these two figures alone.
